Amos' program donated £600 of pork last year when funding for the Elders Nutrition Program ran out. Most of the pork was used to sell additional sausages to tribal members for $2 a pound, but Amos' program donated another 600 pounds of pork to Pono Oklahoma Food to use in its pantry.
Amos's agricultural program also works on cattle breeding, crossing black angus with long-horned cattle to produce cows that carry more meat than longhorn and lean than Angus. The Ponca graze on land once run by a boarding school where local children were sent to learn professions from welding to agriculture. When the school closed in the 1980s, the land was divided among local tribes, with the PonCA receiving 827 hectares. But the reserve was not assigned to them, leading to much of their land being sold to settlers and farmers, including a 110,000-hectare farm that is one of the country's largest diversified farms and ranches.
In 2009, Continental Carbon bought 11 houses, demolished them and settled the residents, including farmers like Amos, in a 0.6-hectare farm.
In the 1990s, residents sued the Conoco Oil Company (now ConocoPhillips), blaming it for chemicals like benzene, toluene and xylene leaking from storage tanks and contaminating their water. The environmental problems caused Ponca so many problems that he was forced to give up his winter storage on the Arkansas River and move to individual allotments. Some settled there, but not for long, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Most of the land is rented from Ponca to the Otoe and Missouria tribes, who currently do not have enough equipment and farmland to rent it out to them, while the rest is used for grazing. But Amos is determined: "We've been fighting weeds for years, and I'm determined that we collect a lot of weeds on our own land, not just on the Arkansas River. The PonCA tribe planted wheat and milo on a 1,200-hectare (1,200-acre) land last year and agreed to extend leases with other farmers rather than lease them out for an agricultural program.
The agricultural programme also maintains a 12 hectare garden that grows completely without chemical use, which means that it is free of pesticides, fertilisers and pesticides. Because the garden requires a lot of manual work - weeding - Amos has acquired a collection of trucks and tractors and combined them to cultivate 450 hectares of land. The products from this garden have been launched - and additional products have been delivered to the health clinic, as well as to a mission in the city that feeds the homeless in Ponca City.
The Agriculture Programme also calls for cooking events and health fairs to provide food for the nutrition programme by providing food to people with diabetes and other health problems. The lessons are regularly conducted by nutritionists from the Ponca City Health Authority and the Health Clinic.
